RYA Sailing School

Learn to Sail in Magical Greece
If you are looking for a sailing holiday or tuition on large comfortable yachts with small class sizes then Aegean Sailing School is for you. Our school is based on the island of Aegina, which is a picturesque island close to Athens with an authentic Greek atmosphere.

9 reasons to choose Aegean Sailing School

  • You will enjoy sailing in this scenic part of Greece, It is a popular playground for Athenians but the towns and coastline are relatively unspoilt by foreign tourism. Unlike other areas, you will not meet flotillas in almost every port.
  • Athens airport has daily scheduled flights from many European cities and is also served by budget airlines.
  • You can combine your sailing course or holiday with a visit to the historic sites of Athens, Epidavros, Navplion, or take a ferry to visit Mykonos or Santorini after your course. We can help you with accommodation and onward travel.
  • Your Skipper / Instructor will be a native English speaker, friendly, skilled, and an experienced teacher and boat-owner. Our Instructors are chosen for their ability to make your course a holiday and adventure as well as providing top-notch instruction.
  • Your will sail on big airy yachts that are easy to handle. Our boats are maintained by our own staff and were chosen for their stability and performance in the local seas. All on-board equipment is bang up to date and we carry some equipment that you may not find on other school boats, such as radar, generator, GPS plotters.
  • You’ll benefit from more individual instruction as we keep our class sizes low. Four is the normal maximum and we frequently run private courses for 2 or 3 people.
  • We include as standard many things for which other schools will charge you as extras – for example: linen and towels, RYA course books and Log Books. We are not the cheapest RYA school in the Med but we aim to offer the best value!
  • We are happy to cater for those who simply want to gain more sailing experience rather than to do a formal course. We also offer holidays afloat for couples and families, where you can join in as much or as little sailing as you choose.
  • Above all, we are a small, family run school and we pride ourselves on our high level of personal service to our customers. This is one reason why many people come back to sail with us again, either for more advanced courses or on our milebuilding trips

A skill for life
With the waves at your feet, the sun on your back, and the wind in your face, sailing is a truly life-affirming experience. Our courses combine the exhilaration of sailing with the laid-back atmosphere you’ll only get in the Greek islands. At the end of one of our courses, you’ll be invigorated, relaxed and smiling! And you’ll take away a skill for life.

Company Overview:
Aegean Sailing School was founded by George and Melody Burton who between them George Burton, Principalhave over 50 years of sailing experience. They chose the island of Aegina as their base due to its unique position and the suitability of the area for novice sailors. Aegina is close to Athens yet retains an essentially relaxed Greek island atmosphere.

The school has grown over the years with the addition of hand-picked staff who share the owners’ love of sailing and desire to share with others the joys of cruising in this part of Greece . Melody Burton, Aegean Sailing School

Many of our clients are referred to us by previous customers or return to sail with us to gain more experience or to do a higher level course. We also offer skippered charter holidays on request.

Our Yachts
"Valentine" is an Atlantic 44, built in Greece in 1995 and “Zotelot” is a Beneteau Oceanis 400, also built 1995. Both are ‘owner’s versions’ and ideal for smaller groups, rather than charter yachts designed for 8-10 people. Please contact us or see our website for further details.

Location & How to Find Us:
We are easily accessible via Athens airport. To get to our island base you will need to catch a bus/taxi and hydrofoil. We can help with all arrangements and transfers are included in the cost of private courses. Although we are not ‘just around the corner’ from the airport, most people enjoy the trip across to us and the advantage is that you will spend your first and last nights in a real Greek island port, not a busy marina.

The Saronic and Argolic Gulfs , where our courses take place, are excellent areas in which to learn to sail. We normally have good winds (F3 - F5) and lots of sunny, dry weather, ideal for sailing. The islands and ports you will visit are very Greek. Even in July and August it is usually possible to get away from the crowds.

This area does not have purpose built marinas. You will visit harbours, fishing villages, and anchorages. Trainee skippers will find plenty of challenges with ‘Med mooring’ to master, traffic separation schemes, sectional lights, and fast boats and busy ferry ports to deal with at various points during the course.

Situated at the edge of Europe , we are in an ideal position to offer longer mile-building trips to the Cyclades , one of the world’s most famous cruising areas .

Situated at the edge of Europe, we are in an ideal position to offer longer mile-building trips to the Cyclades and to Turkey. In 2007 we will also cruise through the spectacular Corinth Canal.
